Lecture by Professor Tina Stanković, MD, ’The Future of Surgery in the Agentic AI Era’
Professor Tina Stanković, MD, of Stanford University School of Medicine, will give a lecture titled ’The Future of Surgery in the Agentic AI Era’ on Friday, 4 September, at the SASA Grand Hall, at noon.
This lecture will provide an overview of the development and integration of emerging AI technologies in surgery, with a particular focus on otorhinolaryngology and the surgery of the head and neck. The presentation will centre on three main pillars of academic medicine: scientific research, patient care, and education.
Professor Tina Stanković will shed light on the emergence of specialised artificial intelligence architecture and the need to connect it with healthcare providers and other stakeholders to facilitate further advancement. Furthermore, she will explore a new triad in the decision-making process, consisting of the patient, the physician and artificial intelligence, as well as the key role the physician plays in its successful mediation. The role of artificial intelligence in surgical education, including growing concern about the loss of skills or deskilling, will be addressed, as well as the need for structural areas in which artificial intelligence is not used to ensure acquisition and development of foundational competencies.
The history of medicine and its experience in adopting new technologies is essential for the correct artificial intelligence positioning in the service of health care around the globe.
Professor Konstantina Tina Stanković (MD, PhD, FACS) is a full professor of the Bertarelli Foundation and the head of the Department for Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is also a visiting professor at the Department of Neurosurgery. An expert surgeon in ear and skull base surgery, she was educated at Harvard and received her doctorate in neuroscience specialising in the field of otology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
She combines her surgical expertise with knowledge of physics, molecular biology, neuroscience applied to otology, and electrophysiology of systems to address the unmet needs of people with hearing loss. She has initiated and led interdepartmental, national, and international collaborations focused on the development and application of new molecular diagnostic and therapeutic methods for the treatment of hearing loss and otological diseases, while educating a new generation of leaders in surgery and science. Professor Tina Stanković has been elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine of the USA and president of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology.
